Sam Silvers: [00:00:00] Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the Drench Line Podcast. We are live here at Lajitas Golf Resort in Lajitas, Texas. Uh, it's hotter than sin, and there's 20 billion mosquitoes here today. So if you see me twitch or move really suddenly or fast, it's because there's probably one on my ear or other places they don't need to be.
Sam Silvers: Thanks for-
Logan Newsom: You think the mosquitoes were-
Sam Silvers: Thanks for listening ...
Logan Newsom: you think the mosquitoes were obviously the b- reason for the bad golf yesterday?
Sam Silvers: I, you know, I don't think I really played bad golf yesterday.
Logan Newsom: That is true. I have to g-
Logan Newsom: uh, I want it to be well-documented, and mainly I want it to be well-documented because I don't know if it'll ever happen again, but I want it to be well-documented that you played very respectable golf for a course that is the number one public golf course in Texas.
Logan Newsom: And I think that whenever they, you know, woke up yesterday morning, pin placement, they decided to say, "I wanna make this miserably hard for whoever-
Sam Silvers: Miserable
Logan Newsom: ... the poor suckers that are gonna be." You know, the unique part about this [00:01:00] is most of the time it's a golf resort, right? People come out that are very, very well-conditioned, exceptional golfers.
Logan Newsom: Obviously, that was not the case with the crew that we were playing with yesterday. Yeah. Um, so, you know, maybe a little ... I guess if they would've kinda gave us a little heads-up, or maybe we could've gave them heads-up, like, "Hey, we suck." "Maybe you could just put those on the flattest part of the green." Yeah.
Logan Newsom: "That would sure help us out." Um, yeah, so Sam has, uh, introduced us. Again, like you said, we're here at the Lajitas Golf Resort. Uh, we've been coming out here, I guess we've had a chance to come out here for a couple of times and kinda had a chance to maybe come out and get some content and do a couple episodes out here while we're double-dipping on, on a little bit of getaway.
Logan Newsom: Uh, we talked about what it's like to vacation with- stock at home and, you know, the challenges that can come with that. So yeah, we're definitely living kind of right in the middle of it. But, um, for those of you guys that haven't subscribed yet, we encourage you to do that. Um, find us on drenchline.com.
Logan Newsom: Again, we've talked about it in the past, that is kind of home base for us. [00:02:00] Um, reach out with questions, content, all the good stuff. We try to post as much as we can there. Follow us on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, any of those social platforms. Um, and again, you know, if you're interested in sponsorship, uh, or questions, please feel free to catch that drenchline.com and, and, and drop us a line, drop us a tag there.
Sam Silvers: Yeah, absolutely. We've had several people reach out to us about sponsorships already and, and, uh, Katie, who's behind the camera, has done a really good job of, um, putting together a sponsorship packet. So reach out to us if that's something that you're interested in. Um, so I, I think we were talking yesterday, like, like what are we gonna talk about on this episode?
Sam Silvers: And we had a lot of other things that we, we could, but, you know, I think there's some real world current events that have popped up in the past week or so, um, well probably month, let's just say month, um, that's gonna kinda dictate this episode, and that's a, you know, new world screw worm. That's what everybody's talking about.
Sam Silvers: [00:03:00] Um, so maybe we could go over today, like h- how does it affect us as, as show livestock producers, um, or, or, or even those that are just feeding show stock, maybe they're not raising them. Um, what do we look for? What do we need to be doing? Um- Things like that, so.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and I think the big deal, and I, and I know it's- this has obviously been well-documented if you've, you know, watched any sort of social media feeds in the last...
Logan Newsom: Again, you know, Sam kind of talked about, you know, it's obviously been something that's been of concern for a while. I remember, you know, talking to a couple of our colleagues, um, that have been, you know, maybe at, at ground zero on that in South Texas and, you know, have kind of been, I would say, for the la- maybe even the last couple years.
Logan Newsom: But I remember last summer, you know, really kind of having some dialogue with those guys and kind of what, what that might look like in the future. And then obviously, you know, in the last week to two weeks, whatever, has, has really become, uh, more, I guess, kind of towards the forefront of folks' minds. And so I think the big deal, and I, and I think it, [00:04:00] it has been said, um, it's not the end of the world, and I think it's probably something...
Logan Newsom: And I, and I, I actually watched a deal that Colton Thigpen had, um, briefly hit on, you know, in, in those cattle guys and kind of what they're dealing with it, you know, and how real world and, you know, maybe a commercial setting, it could probably be more impactful than what, you know, maybe it could be in a show setting.
Logan Newsom: I think that goes without saying. But it's treatable- Yeah ... and it's something that if you do get it, um, there is a line of defense and there's options. Whereas, you know, other things that we deal with within the livestock industry, you know, might not be as easily detected, number one, and also prevented or even curable.
Logan Newsom: You know? Yeah. I think that's probably the thing that everyone kind of needs to keep in mind is it is something and it is something that we're gonna have to be very mindful of. It's something that we're gonna have to, you know, watch and pay attention to. Um, and so I thought today as we kind of could dive [00:05:00] into that, we could maybe hit on what it looks like in the show setting in the show barn, and then maybe kind of some thoughts or ideas.
Logan Newsom: I know we've had some conversations back and forth of what that looks like for us as producers, you know, upcoming AI dates, flush dates, just all the, you know, the things that, that we've got to make sure to kind of get that next set ready, um, on the producer side and how that could kind of maybe impact us.
Sam Silvers: Yeah, and, and I think I, I want to start off the conversation by b- before you do anything, consult your, your veterinarian, um, your, your doctor of veterinary medicine. Um, and we know that there's several of those that'll get on here and comment if we say something that's not straight out of the Webster's Dictionary of Animal Health.
Sam Silvers: So only-
Logan Newsom: Only whenever... Uh, so far I haven't been called out.
Sam Silvers: That's definitely, so far that's only been you. It's coming. Oh. It's coming. I, I think as you, as you gain in popularity, they get more criticism and ridicule. Anyways, consult your veterinarian, um- That's first and foremost, like we say on every podcast a- and I [00:06:00] think it's important to follow on social media, like, uh, USDA, um, Texas Animal Health Commission, those things, and, and what they have out as far as quarantine zones and what the laws and regs are.
Sam Silvers: Um, what we're currently doing right now is I've just been logging, uh, in my steno book in my desk, like when I wormed the show lambs, um, how much I gave them, what date it was, and the lot number of, of the Dectomax bottle, because Dectomax has been approved for use- Right ... um, in, in sheep to, to battle New World screw worm.
Sam Silvers: Um, I wasn't told to do that. I just thought it was a great idea. Um, we wormed a set of ewes too. We got them out of the pasture last week, um, wrote that all down. I just think it's good to keep a little y- you know, a little record of what we're doing here. That way, if it does come to you or you need to answer some questions with Texas Animal Health Commission, or maybe travel through one of those [00:07:00] quarantine zones, that you have that information available for them.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and I think that, um, you know, Sam brought up a good point there. There's a lot of folks that have been sharing information. Again, you know, hit on... You hit on Texas Animal Health. I know they've put out, you know, obviously a lot of, of information and documentation of, you know, some rules and regs and, you know, just kind of what everything looks like.
Logan Newsom: I thought a lot of the sale barns have done a really, really good job of kind of- They did ... sharing that information. Obviously, those guys have been, been impacted and probably will continue to be impacted in, in some, you know, some way or another, probably for the, you know, the foreseeable future, at least until, you know, everyone kind of gets maybe a little more of a handle of what this looks like.
Logan Newsom: But as far as- Sheps and Staton's show lambs. What does that look like what y'all are doing on the daily? And, you know, I think the big thing, sometimes this time of the year we might be doing some tail jobs. Mm-hmm. We might be beginning to start some of those sheep on the track [00:08:00] program, so we know we're gonna get some- Yeah
Logan Newsom: nicks and cuts along the way. Yep. What, what's kind of, um, you know, some thoughts that you have got as far as, you know, treating the wounds, fly management, you know, just all the stuff that maybe on the show setting- Yeah ... you guys are kind of thinking about?
Sam Silvers: So h- I w- I would say the first thing i- is a watchful eye, right?
Sam Silvers: You're probably gonna have to take a little more time than usual now. Um, in the mornings, in the evenings, walk through those show animals, look at 'em. Just... I'm not saying you need to grab and check every one of 'em, but just look at 'em and make sure, y- you know, maybe peek under, the... something going on, notice they're not kicking at their bellies or something like that.
Sam Silvers: Um, so just keep a watchful eyes is I think is the main thing. Um, now, like you said, w- we're, we, we're in the transition right now. We're still getting some show lambs in, some show goats in, um, maybe that are freshly banded. Mm. The [00:09:00] producer or, or, or the breeder b- banded them before we got 'em. Um, so what we're doing is we're making sure that they have a Dectomax shot, which again, consult your veterinarian, but to my knowledge, it, it gives protection for 21 days- I saw 21 days, yep
Sam Silvers: is what I saw. So we're giving them a Dectomax shot to help that. Um, and then if they're castrated or they have any wounds, we are s- the open wounds or sores or anything like that, we're spraying it with the screw worm aerosol, um, which we've had around for years. As sheep producers, we-
Logan Newsom: Forever, yep
Sam Silvers: ... I feel like between the screw worm aerosol and, and the old co-ral, uh, when we banded tails or, or banded testicles or anything like that, we al- we've always used that to keep flies out.
Sam Silvers: Um-
Logan Newsom: We live in the Texas Panhandle and band sheep in the middle of January, and I still spray 'em with screw worm spray. Absolutely. It's just what we've always done. Um-
Sam Silvers: Yeah ... little aerosol can, you can find it most places. It may be get a little harder to get right now just because of the whole screw worm deal.
Sam Silvers: Some of it's on back order, but we'll make sure to spray those areas with that really good. Um, it's [00:10:00] kind of a, a, I don't even... The active ingredient's permethrin, I think. Um- And then, like, just any open wounds we'll hit with, like, wound coat or something like that. I, I particularly am not a big fan of, of the Alle shield stuff, um, just because I feel like it seals over a wound, um, and doesn't let it heal.
Sam Silvers: Um, th- you don't get much airflow in there. So I, I'm kind of a wound coat guy. The, the purple... I think it's purple, right? Yeah. Scarlex or- The stuff that- ... wound coat ...
Logan Newsom: you know, the, the company does an incredibly good job. When it sprays, it also gets all over your, your hands.
Sam Silvers: Yes. That product. Absolutely. Okay.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, just making sure we're on the same one.
Sam Silvers: It leaves purple crap everywhere.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. I actually, uh, we were banding some tails. Actually, we were not banding tails, and I don't know if you follow me on Snapchat, but we did some hot iron banding the other day.
Sam Silvers: I saw that. How'd that go?
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Well, we've got a late set of sheep, and full disclosure, most of them are cross-bred ewe lambs, so it really didn't matter what, you know, how close our tail docking method got.
Logan Newsom: But, [00:11:00] um, I actually thought that it might be a good time to, to pull out the old hot iron bander, and while we were doing that, um... And so for those of you that don't know, you know, the hot iron bander, you know, cast... or, uh, will, will cut the tail, uh, and then cauterize it while it does it. So it can be a, it can be a good tool, especially maybe, you know, for like-
Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm
Logan Newsom: guys in more of a commercial setting. For folks that are raising show stock, you know, if you're trying to get that, that tail docked appropriately, it is not something that I would recommend. Um, but yeah, we, uh, we did some of that, and I thought with everything that's going on, I thought, "Hey, this is kind of a good time to maybe do that."
Logan Newsom: You know, it could be something that, you know, could have less of a wound to treat immediately we get that off, less fly issues that could potentially, you know, kind of, kind of raise their head. But point of the story and what kind of got me thinking about that was, um, Quentin was, you know, helping us and we both just had wound coat all over our hands.
Logan Newsom: And he asked, "Does this stuff wash off- Yeah. I, I- ... in seven [00:12:00] days?"
Sam Silvers: I know that, uh, when we're, we're tagging and marking out at Mad Dog, um, you know, Rick McPhaul, he, he's old-timer, so he's still a big fan of Co-Ral, and, and Jurahee absolutely hates it when I come home from marking sheep at Mad Dog, 'cause Co-Ral stinks so bad and she literally will wash my clothes five or six times or not even let me bring them in the house, 'cause it smells so bad.
Sam Silvers: But that old Co-Ral is, is really good stuff at keeping the flies away.
Logan Newsom: It's like on days whenever you, you know that, uh, the kids actually prolated legs, because they walk in and you can smell it. You know, if they say... Uh, hey, I'm asking, "Did y'all prolate legs today?" "Oh, yeah, yeah, we did it. Yeah, we did it."
Logan Newsom: 100%. Yeah, and they still smell like Calvin Klein aerosol. Bunch of liars.
Sam Silvers: Exactly. Yeah, so, uh, you know- Point being, um, and, you know, kind of a little bit summary on the show stock, um, I do think banded weathers- Look, there's a little mosquito on this ... one of them giant mosquitoes that they grow out here in Lajitas.
Sam Silvers: Uh, side note, um, the guy that was [00:13:00] traveling, or the guy that was, uh, bringing us back and forth from our, our house that we rented up here to kind of the main lodge, I was asking him, you know, just kind of creating some small talk this morning, and he said he was from, like, far East Texas, Tyler, and he was commenting on the mosquitoes out here.
Sam Silvers: That's awesome. And I'm thinking, "If you're from the piney woods and the swamp, and you are commenting about the mosquitoes in far west Texas," like, that just shows you how bad they are out here.
Sam Silvers: Yeah. I, I, I haven't seen any on you this morning. I think they're scared of them cheetahs or leopards on your shirt there.
Logan Newsom: This is my, this is my, this is my big cat hunter shirt, uh, proudly, proudly sponsored by Buddy Love clothing line. Uh, make sure and follow Grayson, um-
Sam Silvers: I literally thought you went to, like, one of those shops in the, you know, the old supermarket square down in downtown Houston and found that.
Logan Newsom: No, this is Fine Threads.
Logan Newsom: This is what I wear whenever it's summer jackpot season. Yeah. I call it my big cat hunter shirt. You know, it's not like, I mean, what is, uh, yeah- Hunting and- Yeah, our buddy Miles Gibbs, you know- ... and Lowe ... and he's always, you know, commenting on [00:14:00] his, uh, him and Clintoe Brown, and they're, you know, hunting the big cats.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. It's probably not something like that, but-
Sam Silvers: That's a, that's a pretty cool dynamic duo there. I, I re- it... I, I don't know, how are we gonna get on the subject of, of Miles Gibbs, but he's an interesting character.
Logan Newsom: He is very interesting. I mean-
Sam Silvers: We've both known him probably,
Logan Newsom: I guess, majority of our lives. I don't know why I got to thinking about, uh, him and, you know, obviously where he lives is, I would say, very similar terrain- It-
Logan Newsom: to where we're currently at ... where we're at, hunts lions. I mean, just a unique individual, sharp, good dresser, too. Sketches.
Sam Silvers: I always think he looks very dapper-
Logan Newsom: Classic ... when he's judging. Sketches, uh, incredible, you know, pictures and paintings.
Sam Silvers: Artist.
Logan Newsom: Artist. Oh my God. Like- We don't have enough time to-
Sam Silvers: Anyways, that's enough about-
Sam Silvers: probably dig into- ... MG ... dig into Miles
Logan Newsom: yeah, before we got sidetracked on- MG ... yep, um, back to wrapping up summary of... I was, I was... I had a g- I had a very good point before you made a comment on my threads.
Logan Newsom: Um, banded, castrated wethers is- Mm ... [00:15:00] probably, in my mind, and kinda what I've been thinking about at the house, the area of the biggest concern.
Sam Silvers: Yeah.
Logan Newsom: Um, and I think just the main thing, you know, if you get a track wound, or even, let's say, if, if you, if you, you're forced to do a tail job, you know, kinda right now, and, and our thoughts have kinda been, "Hey, maybe let's prolong that just a little bit longer until, you know, we kinda get a little better handle or just feel a little more comfortable on, you know, this whole deal," um, those are all areas that you see while those sheep are walking around the pens, while you're doing legs.
Logan Newsom: You know, like, kids are setting them up in the yard. Like, they're just easy to spot. They're easy to clean. Up underneath there, you know, where that sack either might still be or where it was and where that wound is still, you know, potentially kinda open or just still trying to heal, it's just not an area that you visually can lay eyes on as easily.
Logan Newsom: So that's kinda been probably for, for me, in my mind, in thinking about our operation, that's been the thing that's... How about that service? Thank you, gentlemen. How about that? Um, that's probably been the area that, [00:16:00] you know, I'm like, "Hey, if we band one- It's a weird drink out of a straw ... um, if we band one, we really need to kinda pay attention to that.
Logan Newsom: Like, we just- 100% ... we just gotta be kinda on top of it. You know, we've kinda been making notes on the board, like, "Hey, double-check that sheep." You know, we had a, we got a wether, and I guess that's kind of a little bit, you know, has been on my mind because we had a wether that we banded the other day that was a ram/wether option deal that we were kinda watching, and, um, ended up castrating him.
Logan Newsom: And, and, you know, his testicles were a little bigger, so it was a, it was a harder castration. Um, but it's definitely something that I think those areas, and, and, you know, potentially wounds like that- I- ... are the ones that can be more concerning. And we didn't talk about this, but I think those that are, um, maybe showing some fine wool sheep, right?
Logan Newsom: Um, busted horns- Mm-hmm ... or if you, if you had to, you know, shuck or shell some of those horns- For sure ... they're gonna get bloody. Um, really watch those, 'cause, 'cause they could get in at the base of the horn there. Base of the horn. Absolutely. Good point. Um, watch that, or, you know, maybe... I, I don't know. I don't think you can wait too long, 'cause then they get too hard.
Logan Newsom: But if you have to do that or maybe a fine wool [00:17:00] just busted a horn on the fence, you know, check that. Yeah, while you're, while you're trying to halter break them, that seems like- Yeah ... we do a good job with our fine wools of, of shelling their horns while we're halter breaking them. You know, they'll hook their horn on a fence, and boom- Yeah
Logan Newsom: shelled. That's kinda- So- ... how it goes around our house ...
Sam Silvers: to
Sam Silvers: recap on the show side, keep a vigilant eye.
Logan Newsom: Yep.
Sam Silvers: Right? Um, check the social media for USDA, Texas Animal Health Commission- Consult your veterinarian, um, screw worm aerosol, Dectomax Those, you know, Dectomaxum if you're having problems or, you know, you w- I, I, I think it's good right now, just Dectomaxum, screw worm, any o- s- aerosol spray on any open wounds and things like that.
Sam Silvers: And again, just keep a, a watch for. Now, as, as we transition that talk a little bit from show animals to, let's say us that are getting ready to breed, right? We had a, we had a flush scheduled in June and, and we kinda pushed that back into July to [00:18:00] just from the standpoint of we needed to figure out what we were gonna do here, right?
Sam Silvers: We were gonna- we needed to figure out our protocol, 'cause typically at our house when we flush and we put embryos in those recepts, they get kicked back out on the pasture-
Logan Newsom: Absolutely
Sam Silvers: ... in, in years past. But this year, um, we're probably gonna have to have a good protocol in place before I do that. Um, a- and I didn't yet, so I said, "Hey, let's just push it to July.
Sam Silvers: Let's figure a little bit of this out. Y- you know, what's another 20, 25 days?" Um, so what... A- and I know you and I had talked on the phone. Um, Logan had a really good, good idea, was I, I think, you know, off the cart we're probably gonna staple or suture every wound. Yep. Um, we're dang sure gonna spray those wounds, which we already do.
Sam Silvers: Um, but I think we're gonna spray them good and put screw worm aerosol on them, and then probably give every ewe a shot of Dectomax as she's coming off the cart. Yeah. I thought that was a great idea.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, that's kinda where we're gonna land as far as, you know, what we can do. 'Cause I think, you know, exactly what we talked about, the benefits in the show setting and [00:19:00] how easy this can be.
Logan Newsom: And easy's probably not the right word, but how manageable it can be to keep a close eye, jump in things on the stand, treat wounds, you know, stay on top of it. On the other side of it, for guys that are in the producer setting and, you know, doing the things that we're trying to do and getting ready for breeding, again, it doesn't matter if you're smaller, 20, 30 head deal or, you know, running 500 ewes, whatever that looks like, it's physically impossible to, to go through those things every single day, find every single...
Logan Newsom: You know, to treat them, let's say, after, you know, even, even the small little incisions from, let's, let's say like an AI. And obviously whenever we're doing flush work, you know, there's some big, you know, especially on the donors, there's some big invasive wounds. Like, that is a full-blown surgery. So those wounds like that are, you know, gonna be at the forefront of us, you know, really wanting to kinda treat them, um, prevent anything from blowing up and causing an issue.
Logan Newsom: So everything that you said's kinda what my thoughts are. I agree with you on the Alu-Shield, you know, silver spray is what we [00:20:00] call it around our house. I think we will probably utilize that, and we've always utilized it for AI stuff, because I do think it seals that a little better, you know? And where, you know, we were talking about, you know, on maybe track wounds or tail jobs, how wound coat can, you know, maybe be a little...
Logan Newsom: a healing that's a little different, I guess. Yeah. I think the Alu-Shield, if it will kinda seal that and maybe prevent, you know, anything from trying to get in, I think that could probably be beneficial Coat that area well with, you know, Katron And we're, and we're talking about a, a, a small incision, right?
Logan Newsom: Small pencil s- pencil size, you know? And, and, you know, value shield, I, I agree is probably fine for something like that.
Sam Silvers: W- where we get into issues and, and my hangup on value shields is when we get into those, you know, kinda like big tail job or, you know- Yeah ... say an, a nasty sore mouth kinda infection on their tail head or something like that.
Sam Silvers: To me, it, it just stays covered up, and I, I wanna dry that wound and dry it out, you know?
Logan Newsom: Well, yeah, and I, and I think that's all fair. I, I, and I would, I would agree with that. Um, [00:21:00] but I think on, on a situation like that where, you know, kinda sealing up that, um, that little spot, um, a suture, a couple of staples.
Logan Newsom: Um, one of the guys that's been doing some AI work for us, Dr. Summers out at Milshev Vet Clinic, he has a, a, a glue that they use on dog and cat surgeries. Okay. And so he actually uses that with every single one, and it's, it's been, it's- Very good ... it's worked really well. So when you get those wounds kinda sealed up, you know, and c- and prevent them from, you know, being open, then I think we can, you know, use some sort of an external sprays, uh, you know, like you said, Corral, Katron, screw worm spray, whatever that looks like, and then we're gonna hit all those things with a shot of Dectomax and hope that that can give us enough of a window there and some, you know, preventative measures to keep those, you know, New World screw worms- S- so-
Logan Newsom: off of them, out of them, and, and allow that wound to heal, and then hopefully we'll be in good shape ...
Sam Silvers: the, the hard part for me and the question I [00:22:00] have- Okay ... on all this is, uh, from, from what I've read, you know, we have fly systems in, in both our show barn and our ewe barn, and we always just try to keep flies out.
Sam Silvers: When you have a fly system, can you elaborate on that? Do you have a Super Soaker 3000- No ... that you put permethrin in? Have you seen those on Facebook where the- Oh, yeah. Gosh, I'm- I wanna try it.
Logan Newsom: I know.
Sam Silvers: If I had some cows, I would definitely have that 'cause I'd be shooting for that.
Logan Newsom: You know those guys are just, like, having fun, you know?
Logan Newsom: Having a blast. They're just like... Having a blast.
Sam Silvers: But so y- you know, some of the stuff you said you read, like, y- you don't wanna kill the sterile fly, right? 'Cause it needs to do its job, but at the same time, do we... Uh, you know, maybe that's a question we need to ask an expert. It, it-
Logan Newsom: Yeah, I don't like flies ever
Sam Silvers: but I don't wanna overload my barn with, you know, stable flies and- Sure ... just normal flies and stuff like that. Um-
Logan Newsom: Yeah,
Logan Newsom: and I'm a, I'm very much a proponent and, and I've always said that, you know, if the Lord gave me one wish, it's gonna be hard for me not to say I would like all the flies to go away.[00:23:00]
Logan Newsom: Yeah. I, I- I hate them ...
Sam Silvers: at this point in my life, I would say mosquitoes.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. God almighty. They say that they're attracted to sweetness. You think that's the problem?
Sam Silvers: I'm not very sweet.
Logan Newsom: Did you put, did you put wax or beard oil in your mustache this morning?
Sam Silvers: No. I, but I told you I, I really thought about it 'cause I thought about kind of like waxing this up today, but 107 on the golf course, I felt like it would just like-
Logan Newsom: We've got a...
Logan Newsom: I've, I know a guy- ... just melt ... I've got a guy that, you know, is pretty prolificent, proficient- Proficient ... proficient with his mustache, uh-
Sam Silvers: Oh, yeah ...
Logan Newsom: you know?
Sam Silvers: Uh, Mustache Man.
Logan Newsom: Mustache
Sam Silvers: Man. Yeah, we've got a- Yeah ... we've got a, we've got a... There... I know a guy, I believe is the term. Yeah. Um, sometimes when he's talking to me, it, it like almost hits me in the face.
Sam Silvers: You know?
Sam Silvers: I'm like-
Logan Newsom: Sometimes whenever he has a rough day- ... backing up ... you can always tell 'cause it kinda starts to
Sam Silvers: Um, you know, speaking of him, positive vibes. That guy's always-
Logan Newsom: Always, always
Sam Silvers: positive vibes, uh- In a great mood Yep, yep. Really is.
Logan Newsom: And, uh, always has some fresh, fresh kicks.
Sam Silvers: Definitely, yeah.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Definitely. [00:24:00] Fresh kicks. Shout out to Mustache Man.
Sam Silvers: You won't- Shout out. Um- You won't catch him wearing my clogs.
Logan Newsom: No, no. We- well, that's a conversation for a whole nother day, men that wear Birkenstocks.
Sam Silvers: Back on track here. Real men wear Birkenstocks. It's a high-quality German-made, German engineering. Um, so we went over the screw worm, right?
Sam Silvers: We went over it in the show barn. We went over it in the ewe deal. Um-
Sam Silvers: Kind of what
Logan Newsom: we're trying to do, yeah, from a producer stand- What, what we're trying to do.
Sam Silvers: So I, I feel like we need to probably jump forward, or that leads us into our next conversation of, uh, we're at the tail end of, of buying our show animals, right?
Sam Silvers: Um, so we get into what, what you and I define as summer maintenance, right? Um, tell us what that looks like at, uh, Newsom Livestock. Just summer maintenance. You know, we're not- we're not trying to go out and win the show tomorrow, anything like that. We're just trying to keep them healthy, on feed, headed in the right direction, off to a good start.
Logan Newsom: [00:25:00] Yeah,
Logan Newsom: and, um, you know, to kind of highlight that, I think there's probably a, a little bit of different feeders and mentalities at the moment. For us, for you guys, for a lot of our customers, I would say, you know, their barn is 80 to 90% full with the ones that they're gonna purchase. You know, we've been at this for, what, you know, Red Raider sale in Lubbock was the first week, and- Probably been at it since we've been...
Logan Newsom: Well, it seems year-round now. It is. But we've probably been buying sheep and looking at them since February. Yep, yep. So you, you leave, you know, Houston, and you know, kind of think, "Okay, I've got one more show. I've got Austin, and then, you know, I'm gonna have a little break, and kids can have a little break."
Logan Newsom: I mean, you know, for what we're trying to do and what our goals are, it just seems like that's... And, you know, you got state fair, so I mean, producers are trying to get rid of those sheep. So- For us, we've got majority of our sheep on feed, so we are, like what Sam said, you know, we're kind of getting to that summer maintenance deal.
Logan Newsom: I do think there's a lot of families that kind of like to get through, you know, maybe school, [00:26:00] maybe go on that first summer vacation, just kind of have a little break. Some ag teachers, I know we've kind of started to have... I think some of our Texas majors have finally started sending out some premium checks.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. Um, so you know, there's some of those guys that maybe are just- And announcing judges ... announcing judges, all this stuff. So there's some of those families that are, you know, maybe at a different point and maybe not quite to, let's say, where we're at within summer maintenance. And, you know, I kind of hit on that a little bit last time.
Logan Newsom: We've got, we've got guys that are listening from California. We've got guys in the Midwest. We're just gonna talk about where we're at, so if you're not necessarily, you know, right in line with us as far as that timeline, don't worry. Yeah. You can listen to other episodes. You can, you know, catch up on where we're at.
Logan Newsom: We're just gonna talk about where we're at within, within our program. Um, so don't feel like you're behind, I guess, was kind of what I was getting at with that whole saga. Summer maintenance for us It looks like a couple of different things. One, I feel like it always kinda starts to kinda, kinda happen right here in the middle of June.
Logan Newsom: As I spoke last [00:27:00] time, you know, Graham fully believes that, you know, he wants to be on the Battleship team and the Underwater Checkers team, and whatever else. Jo, for some reason, is falling right in line with that. Um, unfortunately she's now decided that she also wants to participate in golf, so you know, it's not like, you know, stock showing-
Sam Silvers: I heard there's basketball coming
Sam Silvers: loses the ball career ... here is going, like Sheryl Swoopes kinda deal?
Logan Newsom: We've, we've got, we've got basketball going, so we've got- Championship this weekend ... camps going. We've just got back from church camp, and we've got all the things- Mm ... that the kids are involved in, so... And, and, and all great things. I say that, you know, in a 100% joking manner.
Logan Newsom: But I'm gonna be completely honest, if we had to go to a show tomorrow, our sheep would look very, very well. I feel like they're in good shape. I feel like we've got a, a very, very high quality set of sheep on feed. Sheep and child compatibility is at an all-time low. Yeah. We ain't, we ain't ready.
Sam Silvers: We ain't there.
Logan Newsom: Um, we're halter broke-
Sam Silvers: And, and we're in, we're in the same boat, right? And so w- we talked about this yesterday. It, uh... Mock's putting his [00:28:00] TLMG showcase show on this weekend, and the kids wanna go, and you're like, "Are you going?" And I'm like, "I don't know." Mock's calling, "Are you coming?" I'm like, "I don't... We're, we're gonna shear them Friday and see what they look like."
Sam Silvers: And, and I'm, I'm a big proponent of, uh, don't get a good sheep beat, right? If you're not prepared, pick your battles. Like, when you, when you go, be prepared and ready to go. Don't just say, "Hey..." You know, it's not like going to the grocery store. You don't just wake up one day and say, "I'm gonna go to a show today."
Logan Newsom: Yeah, that's definitely not what we do. Um-
Sam Silvers: So yeah, we're, we're with you. Same boat.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, so we're, we're... Again, like I said, you know, and, and the sheep are... The sheep could go show. They're, they're, they look well. Um, we've started, you know... We're halter broke. Halter broke. And, and I think that's probably the deal that we try to focus on with summer maintenance.
Logan Newsom: We're halter broke. We've got majority of our, especially our state fair stuff and maybe some of our older ones, for the most part, jumping on the stand.
Sam Silvers: Yep.
Logan Newsom: We've done our treadmill training, like, for the most part. Yeah. You know, we're kinda going three minutes forward, three minutes backwards.
Sam Silvers: Cleaning up their feed twice [00:29:00] a day consistently.
Logan Newsom: All, all, all stuff that, you know, we've, we've done a good job of getting them to this point It's just once we get those sheep for us, and I've probably, you know, spoke about it and will continue, our big deal is we get sheep in the yard. We've kinda got a patio off the side, you know, of a detached garage in our house, and it kinda, you know, sits there and that's, and-
Sam Silvers: I can see you there sitting in the shade with a mixed drink-
Logan Newsom: Me sitting there watching
Sam Silvers: gel in your hair, just yelling at the kids.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, yeah. No, like telling them, you know, "Hey, you're doing good, guys. Keep it up." Yeah, I bet, I bet that's it. Clapping.
Sam Silvers: That's not the Snapchat side of it. That
Logan Newsom: happens later in the year. Um, early in the year, uh, post summer maintenance, there's not quite as much clapping. There's a lot of, "It's constructive criticism, that's all it is." Yeah, that's... There it is. Yeah. You know, you gotta be tough on these kids. You gotta raise them to be tough. Mm-hmm. Um, but that's kinda where we're at.
Logan Newsom: So, so again, you know, and I kinda talked about it, one of the things that I try to push for a lot of our customers and I always kinda try to emphasize, when those sheep can get to that point, halter broke, getting out of the [00:30:00] pen, you know, leading well, s- jumping on the stand for the most part Rule of thumb for us is that's typically where we might wanna start kinda doing some exercise, maybe getting them kinda broke to the track, getting them broke to the treadmill.
Sam Silvers: Yep.
Logan Newsom: I always tell our families, make sure... I call it treadmill training. Make sure that you get those things on the treadmill, make sure you let them find the corners of the track prior to when they need it. Yeah. Because if we wait till all of a sudden we pull those things out one day and we say- Oh, they need conditioning
Logan Newsom: "Hey, man, that thing's, that thing's chubby. We gotta, we gotta start hammering on him," well, then you have this two-week window where you gotta train them to a treadmill, you gotta train them to a track or a track dog, and now you've lost another two weeks. And so we try to start doing a lot of that with what we're gonna call, you know, kind of our summer maintenance.
Logan Newsom: That might be putting them in the track. How we start our sheep on the track is we put them in the track, we put the kids with, you know, a, a flag or a sorting stick, and they chase them around. Yeah. Let them kinda find the corners. Let them kinda figure out kinda what we're doing, then we might introduce a track dog.
Logan Newsom: You know, kinda... But we try to kinda do some [00:31:00] of that maybe prior to really, really needing it, so that whenever we can, we can hit the ground running and we can be ready to go. Same thing if you don't have a track or a track dog, same thing with a treadmill. We've all been there. We know how that works.
Logan Newsom: Unfortunately, you know, you can't hop those sheep up and just say, "All right. We're gonna go three minutes at 70% backwards. We're gonna rock and roll." No, sir. Nightmare. No, it is. It's a train wreck. So a lot of our summer maintenance is gonna look like that. We're gonna make sure that, you know, we can get those sheep out in the yard, we can get them away from their pen.
Logan Newsom: You know, they're hand walking good. Um, they're jumping on the stand. I hate lifting sheep on the stand. That's probably one of the bigger fights that I have with my kids. And that's also one of the things that I can tell if maybe some of our families have really been on top of their game. If your sheep don't jump on the stand, I'm not 100% sure you've been probably doing legs and all that stuff maybe quite like you're supposed to be.
Sam Silvers: Yeah. N- now there, there are some that are just idiots and are just not gonna jump on the stand. Um-
Logan Newsom: He's making excuses.
Sam Silvers: No, uh, um, have you shown a lot of Southdowns? [00:32:00]
Logan Newsom: No, we stay away from those.
Sam Silvers: It, it literally is the most unathletic thing you've ever seen in your life, watching one try and jump on a stand.
Sam Silvers: Um, but yeah, so w- we're the same. That's what we're doing at the house, same way. Um, our... Actually our, our early sheep, what I would call our early sheep that we're getting ready for state fair and stuff, you know, this last week we kinda transitioned them to a little protein 'cause they were getting a little chub on them.
Sam Silvers: We're kinda upping the track and treadmill just a little bit on them. Um- Clean waters, that's something that we do. We clean waters every... Try to clean them every Sunday, clean the feeders, make sure the fans are going. If you have porticoals, make sure those are going. You know, keeping them cool and comfortable through these months that are coming up, you know, June, July, August, September.
Sam Silvers: They're just gonna be miserably hot, so-
Logan Newsom: Well, and kind of wrapping back around, you know, we talked about it obviously with the New World screw worm, um, fly maintenance. Yeah. You know? I mean, keeping those things off of them, you know? And maybe that doesn't... If you don't, you know, we, we've kind of talked about it, I know not everybody has a fly system or [00:33:00] whatever that looks like, but, you know, some sort of Bronco or Tractor Supply fly, fly spray with some, you know, the- Yeah
Logan Newsom: some citronella and, and some- something just that maybe doesn't necessarily kill the flies that you have to just constantly spray- Keep them at bay ... but something that can just keep them, keep them off of them. Yeah. You know, just so the sheep can just lay there comfortably under a fan, you know, and do well and be in a good environment and, you know, clean, clean water, fresh air.
Logan Newsom: You know, all the stuff that, you know, you kind of think, "Oh, but, you know, they're gonna thrive in that." So I think that kind of probably all goes without saying that that's kind of a part of our, you know, our summer maintenance- Yeah ... program. Yeah.
Logan Newsom: You think we've been rambling too long?
Sam Silvers: Uh, we haven't been rambling too long, but, um, we are gonna start kinda wrapping this up. I mean, we talked about the New World screw-on, we talked, talked briefly on summer maintenance, right? Keep them healthy, keep all that stuff. Um, we got a tee time at 10:30. Yep. Um, we're gonna have the boys on later, uh-
Logan Newsom: We're gonna have the boys on later.
Logan Newsom: Hey, [00:34:00] first we gotta, we gotta, we gotta, we gotta highlight it 'cause I know we've got some golf listeners. Today, it's gonna be me and you. Mm-hmm. Okay? And it's gonna be Quentin and- Raider ... Raider. It's gonna be- Shep ... Graham, Shep. Yeah. It's gonna be Katie and Joe. Yeah. Okay? And Connor- They- ... Connor's gonna fall in there somewhere.
Sam Silvers: Did they throw Connor on our team?
Logan Newsom: I don't know. Maybe he'll... Maybe he's been playing putt-putt.
Sam Silvers: He needs to play with y'all. He was out there at 8:00 this morning just banging balls. I mean, sweat dripping already, like- rookie He was serious about it
Logan Newsom: But we're scrambling.
Sam Silvers: Scrambled.
Logan Newsom: And the one thing that we're good at, we're gonna teach k- those kids lessons.
Logan Newsom: Yeah. And if they wanna wager something, they gotta pay up. This is not friendly, this is not a friendly- But I- What are you gonna do?
Sam Silvers: I'm gonna go ahead and tell, I'm gonna tell the audience that, um, I, I don't, I don't know if we're gonna be... I don't know if that Raider McFall is gonna be paying us any money, [00:35:00] 'cause that kid's pretty dang good.
Sam Silvers: Well, we- After what I saw yesterday ...
Logan Newsom: we're gonna, we're making him play from the tips. We just gotta get him frustrated. If he'll, he'll-
Sam Silvers: Yeah, we gotta get in his head
Logan Newsom: ... yeah, if he'll throw one club, we got him. We got him. Got him.
Sam Silvers: And you just kinda like peck- You gotta peck- ... you just peck it a little bit ... you gotta poke at him.
Logan Newsom: Yeah.
Logan Newsom: You gotta poke at him. Yeah, so we got a lot of stuff, so we gotta wrap up. Um, the only other thing, and, and, and Sam kinda highlighted on it, and I wanna make sure it's very clear, and I'm sure for, you know, I would say 99% of our listeners, I think it goes without saying, but we are... We don't have an outline to this.
Logan Newsom: We don't have a, um, script that we're reading. We are just talking freely about what we're doing and hoping that maybe some of our listeners can benefit from it.
Sam Silvers: 100%.
Logan Newsom: Um, we're just trying to help folks out.
Sam Silvers: I gotta quit saying 100%. We're just- Jurahee, I say that too much.
Logan Newsom: That one episode, I said, like, 193,000 times, so don't feel bad.
Sam Silvers: It's tough, right? It's tough being an effective communicator and podcaster, right?
Logan Newsom: Uh, well, it's not for me, because I actually got [00:36:00] one of, one of... Somebody earlier said I looked similar to Theo Von with my sunglasses on.
Sam Silvers: You do not look like Theo Von. Oh.
Logan Newsom: But point being, hey, we're just talking freely.
Logan Newsom: There's gonna be some mistakes that we might say and things that can be said out of context. Obviously, you know-
Sam Silvers: We're not perfect
Logan Newsom: ... we're not perfect. Obviously, you know, Sam, um, said that, you know-
Sam Silvers: Are we really gonna go down this path here? ... sheep, sheep are born with coccidiosis. It's been well documented by our, you know, our
Logan Newsom: vet friends on our podcast that like to comment that they were not born with it.
Logan Newsom: But hey, uh, newsflash, they are exposed to it one second after they hit the ground. Yeah. So we're, we're gonna-
Sam Silvers: So I'm, I'm sorry I was, you know, a couple minutes off there. Yeah.
Logan Newsom: Yeah, so we're gonna call it a wash on that. Call it a- But hey, but, but in all seriousness, we are literally just talking freely. We sat down this morning.
Logan Newsom: Katie kicked the camera on. We started talking about what we're doing. So you know, not to deter anyone, um, but I hate to be the bearer of bad news. We are not perfect, and everything that we say is just things that, you know, honestly pop into our mind. I mean, we're sitting here- Talking [00:37:00] about, you know, the terrain and golf and sheep and everything else, so- Well, and, and I think, I think the things that we talk about too are y- y- it's from the mistakes that we've made.
Sam Silvers: Absolutely. I mean, we have done some dumb stuff in our lifetimes, right? Well- I- in, in the sheep and goat game, and just learning from our experiences is y- you know, how we got to where we're at and what we're talking about today. So, and we still don't get it right- Absolutely ... not every time. Well, there's things that we're, we're gonna talk about that I guarantee you, I know, I know that whenever we left, um, one of those episodes, you know...
Logan Newsom: Oh, it's whenever we were talking about Jurahee hill mite re- remedy. You know, that's something that we've started kind of- Yeah ... you know, dabbling in. So we're, we're gonna learn off each other. Folks are gonna hopefully take some things that, you know, that we've made mistakes on or things that we, you know, feel passionate about that work, and be able to utilize 'em.
Sam Silvers: But, um- Last question. Right now, 'cause I, I think this would be really cool to, to visit in a later episode after the stock show season, check back up. What's your, [00:38:00] what's your, what's your favorite animal in the barn right now? Um, it can be anything. Doesn't matter. Just what's your favorite animal?
Logan Newsom: Well, I think, you know, I talked about it a while ago.
Logan Newsom: I think we've probably got one of the higher quality sets on feed that we've had, so I feel good about it. Um, I feel good about, you know, some, you know, the lineup and some options that we have as far as, you know, hitting judges and, and doing well. Joe's got one on feed that I'm, I'm real high on, a fine wool cross.
Logan Newsom: Okay. Awesome.
Sam Silvers: I hate to pat you on the back, but shout out to Rick. He raised him. Yeah. Okay. And, and what do you... You got, uh, anything? It, uh... There's- And I don't have my... I don't have any goats on feed yet, you know. There's- And you've already got some goats on feed, Juris ... there's two, uh, y- you know, I- Classic pill bug
Sam Silvers: I'm like you. I th- I think this is one of the better sets that we've had on feed in a long time. Um, it, and I told Shep last night, I said, "You know what? I'm not gonna get hung up in the judges and all that stuff. We're gonna, we're gonna show good sheep. [00:39:00] We're gonna do the best we can, and, you know, whatever happens happens."
Sam Silvers: I think I'm at that point in, in my life, right? I'm, I'll be 43 in July, and I'm just not gonna get worked up. We're gonna show good sheep, and if we win, we win, and if we don't, we don't. But there's, there's two that, that kinda, there's two that stick out in my mind, and I'm not... I really didn't... I shouldn't have asked this question, 'cause now I gotta pat you on the back.
Sam Silvers: Boo. The, the little, the little bell, I, I, that... And he may not win a d- a dang thing his whole life, um, but that's my kind. I like that little fart, the, the bell that you raised. Um, and then Staton's got a, a southdown that just is, I think is, is good a one as we've ever shown, so it'll be interesting to see. I thought it'd be cool to visit that later and say- Yeah
Sam Silvers: "Hey, the one you liked was 10th, and the one I liked was 20th," you know? Yeah, that's normally how it goes. Please don't tell Graham that you like that sheep. He's still pissed at me for selling him. Um- I'm gonna tell him all day, so maybe he'll have a bad tee shot ... oh, maybe that'll get his goat. That'll get in his head.
Sam Silvers: Ac- actually, Graham, Graham's tee shots. We'll, we'll s- talk about things that we're gonna re- Dude, you [00:40:00] just strapped them right down the middle today. Y'all are cooked. Oh. Joe says that, um, s- that Grant, her and Graham have been warming up for two and a half hours before our tee time this morning because he played so bad.
Sam Silvers: Graham's been a pretty good golfer his whole life, and I think the eight-inch, uh, growth curve that he's- Yeah ... got going in the last year is starting to affect him, but- Yep ... yeah, so we gotta, we gotta jump off because we gotta get ready to talk some smack to them boys. Yep. Get in their head. So, uh, close it out.
Sam Silvers: Follow us. Like, share, subscribe. If you're interested in a sponsorship, hit us up. Um, until next time, uh, we'll see you down the road, I guess. Yep. Thanks, guys.
